The Emperor penguin is the heaviest and tallest penguin in Antarctica. Emperor penguin chicks are tiny when they hatch, weighing only 150g-200g with a thin layer of down to keep them warm. It takes penguin chicks 50 days to develop the ability to regular their own body temperature.
During the chick-rearing period, there’s a hive of activity in the penguin colony. Parent penguins take it in turns to raise their offspring until they can stand on the ice by themselves. Chicks have grown a thick layer of down and are growing fast – meaning they are very hungry.
